Special needs/autism haircut in Victoria BC

Special Needs/Sensory-Friendly Haircuts.

With a mobile haircut, your child can have a haircut in the most comforting place: home.

If your child has unique challenges with haircuts, you’re eligible for a 40% discount on the first appointment to help us establish trust and ensure that your child feels as comfortable as possible. You can also opt for a “60-minute appointment” if you think a little extra time would help.

If needed, I can do an all scissors cut, avoiding use of scary clippers. Ear plugs can also be requested.

Please reach out to me first if you’re interested. While I can’t promise a perfect experience nor am I specially trained in this area, I will approach every moment with patience, kindness, and an open heart. Parenting is a tremendous and often underappreciated journey, and I’m here to support you however I can.

Preparing for your child’s haircut

If your child has difficulties with haircuts, it is almost 100% certain that I will need your help as the barber. It is not comprehensive, and this is mostly relevant to children on the spectrum, but here is a checklist of things you can do to help me perform a successful and happy haircut for your kiddo:

This video has been very helpful, although it’s not specifically about a mobile haircut, it still holds some valuable tips. Here’s a summary:

  1. Prepare with Videos: Before the haircut, watch videos together of others getting a haircut to familiarize your child with what to expect. Seeing the process visually helps autistic children anticipate the experience and reduces anxiety.

  2. Bring a Timer: Use a visual timer (like an egg timer or a phone app) to show your child how long the haircut will take. Watching the time count down can make the experience feel more manageable and predictable.

  3. Mark the Date on a Calendar: Place a visual reminder, like an emoji or sticker, on a wall or digital calendar. Let your child see the approaching appointment each day to help them mentally prepare.

  4. Show Family Examples: If possible, bring the child along to see a family member’s haircut, or record a video of one to show them at home. This demonstrates that haircuts are safe and comfortable, helping them feel more secure.

  5. Use Noise-Canceling Headphones or Earplugs: Block out potentially stressful sounds, like clippers, with noise-canceling headphones or earplugs. This can help reduce sensory overload during the haircut. (I can also perform an all-scissors cut if needed)

  6. Choose an Understanding Barber: I see myself as an understanding person :) Please communicate with me beforehand, I welcome any information that will help me serve your kiddo better.
